Why Self-Work & Self-Development is Important:
It’s been awhile, but I am excited to start writing regularly again, welcome back and thank you for taking the time to read this post
As a therapist, I will be the first person to say it. Therapy is not for everyone but that doesn’t mean that self-development and self-work isn’t for everyone.
We all have flaws, we are human. We all have things that can be strengthened through more insight and more awareness and it is important to understand not only your strengths but also knowing your areas for growth.
Why? Well, without that your relationships can only go so deep, your work will only grow so much, your ability to connect to the world differently won’t change if you don’t change. Let’s face it, most of us either have upbringings that are challenging or go through tough situations that shape how we see the world and that is an important thing to process.
Self-work can be scary because it means facing certain things that are hard and intense but the up sides far outweigh the downsides. This will allow for emotional intelligence and long-term fulfillment in your life. When you are aware of how you show up in the world that creates more trust within yourself, but also for the people around you. You will be able to handle life’s challenges more effectively and will improve your relationships and enhance your mental health as well as self-confidence.
There is a difference between self-work versus self-care
While these two things are both helpful to over all life satisfaction and your wellbeing they have very different functions. Self-care improves mood in the moment and can restore your energy.
Self-work is active, sometimes uncomfortable, and it’s the process of inner change (like addressing personal flaws)
Some tips for self-work:
1- Make sure to reflect on your actions, the more you reflect and take accountability the easier it is to be able to challenge your behavior patterns and understand them
2- Be patient and gentle- approach personal growth with patience and allow yourself to make mistakes. Change takes time and regression of behavior change is normal
3-Set personal goals, focus on improving specific areas of your life. You cannot change yourself or your life over night, so allow yourself time to grow into new patterns
